Gmail Keeper – the email and label backup tool dedicated for Gmail, recently has drawn more and more interests.

However, while this gmail backup software does the Gmail backup work quite well already, itself hasn’t been updated for a while.

And we need a more complete local backup solution for the bunch of Google service, so here what you might be interested in, is the upcoming features for Gmail Keeper:

The new development plan for Gmail Keeper

View and search downloaded emails.
Currently, the downloaded emails are stored as eml files being compressed in the zip archives, so you’ll need a EML file viewer to read them, and you’ll need an archiver program to read the zip files.

Why not include a viewer like the Gmail web for viewing and searching the downloaded emails and labels? All after all, Gmail’s tag-based interface is what we are familiar with and in favor of.

Backup Google calendar and contacts.
Most of the time, our Gmail contacts, as well as calendars, are as important as our emails, why shouldn’t Gmail Keeper also backup these data?!

Stay turned, and Gmail Keeper will become:

Your all-in-one universal cloud data backup tool for Windows!

And you might want to subscribe the software newsletter to get informed.

Gmail Labels just added a new optional feature to Gmail (Google Apps included) called Smart Labels.

Once this new ‘lab’ is turned on, three labels will be automatically added to your Gmail account:

Bulk

Notifications

Forums.

And Gmail to intellectually check each email and apply these labels, base on the source. for example:

The ‘Forums’ label will be applied to all emails sent from Google Groups ;

The ‘Bulk’ emails will be added to all emails that are sent by newsletter systems.

Tips:

According to the Gmail Blog post, you can further control how Gmail should process those emails that are recognized by Smart Labels, e.g. skip the Inbox, forward to somewhere else, etc, in the Filters tab in Gmail settings.

The recent Gmail data loss

As many of your might already know that, recently Gmail server had a problem that affected approximately 150,000 Gmail users.

They lost all their emails in Gmail. Google is working on the data restore, but so far over 5 days already now, Gmail is still not back for everyone.

Google might will be able to restore all the emails for everyone in the end, but it’s still horrific, isn’t it?

So,

You should have local backup of your cloud data, Gmail included

Cloud service is very convenient, and has been very common and popular nowadays.

And most of the time, your data is safe in the cloud, but not when the cloud service is having a glitch.

So, you should backup your cloud data, before it’s too late. And IMHO, have a local copy of your online data is the best way.

And that’s why I have developed Gmail Keeper for backing up Gmail and Google Apps emails and labels.
