Email Viewer – preview video of upcoming new Gmail Keeper

By “new Gmail Keeper” I mean a completely rewritten version of this Gmail backup tool, I think you can tell by the new user interface.

The new email viewer is a simple, Gmail-Web-alike viewer for the backup data – including the Gmail labels, the email themselves and the email attachments (open with associated, external programs, eg your MS Word).

The brand new version of Gmail Keeper will also address many of the problems in the current version, for example, the 4GB zip file size limit will be gone. I’ll cover more details in the upcoming blog posts.

PS: There will be a slight price increase and the version for Google Apps will be separated and will be priced differently. So you might want to buy Gmail Keeper now and get the upgrade in your free upgrade period when this new version is out. And of course, there will be a special price for current GmailKeeper users.

BTW, the old plan for the new version of this gmail backup software was different – it was a run-locally-web-based software, and that plan had led to a new project of mine – LIVEditor (a real-time html/css/js code editor). And I changed my plan as you can see in the video. I’ll reveal more details on this in the future.

  1. Daniel L. Lieberman says:

Will there be an upgrade path? If not will it be cheaper to buy a second copy so I am within the free upgrade period?
    TIA

  2. Shyuan says:

    Hi,

Very nice to see the development! I bought GmailKeeper in Nov 2012, do I entitle the upgrade? Besides, will there be Beta invitation? Kindly advise. Thank you! 🙂

  3. Edwin says:

@Daniel, yes, there will be a upgrade path.
@Shyuan, according to the current upgrade policy I’m afraid no, sorry. And the beta will be public and all existing customers will be notified.

    • Shyuan says:

      Hi Edwin,

      Thanks for your confirmation. 🙂

You’ve mentioned something about upgrade in this paragraph:

PS: There will be a slight price increase and the version for Google Apps will be separated and will be priced differently. So you might want to buy Gmail Keeper now and get the upgrade in your free upgrade period when this new version is out. And of course, there will be a special price for current GmailKeeper users.

Does this means only those who purchase GmailKeeper from now on will get free upgrade? Is that what you mean? 🙂

  4. Bob says:

Can I be on a beta testing to try it out. I have lots of GMail and Google Apps customers wanting this but as the existing version had the 4gb limit and 64,000 message limit (only a few customers are above 64,000 messages but most are above 4GB).

What is the message limit now?
What is the files size limit now as I have customers with more than 20GB of email per account?

Been waiting for years for this update. Too bad there is not a discount as I bought it in Nov 2011 as the site said the larger file size and email limitations would be fixed soon at that point. But I want to make sure you are around for a long time to come so if it costs me to make sure this keeps going I’ll just pass that along to my customers as the cost of doing business.

Thanks for the update!!!! Very excited!!!!
    Bob

    • Edwin says:

@Bob, there will be a discount for existing customers.

About the new zip format will be zip64, and according to Wikipedia, the limit is 16 exabytes = 17,179,869,184 GB 😀 So the question will become: is your hard disk large enough? Joke aside, I think very large zip files are not really practical.

  5. Brian says:

I have a google apps account and my wife has a normal account, does this mean we need to buy 2 separate editions?

Can you clarify if I buy now will I get a free upgrade to the google apps edition?

    Thanks

    • Edwin says:

@Brian, The Google Apps version will support normal Gmail accounts. Well, users within his/her upgrade period will get the Google Apps edition, others can upgrade with reasonable discount.

  6. Terry Crawford says:

I have sent several requests for support and have received no reply. My copy of GmailKeeper does not backup automatic on schedule. I have to always do manual backups. If there is not reply to the existing problem, I would not be interested in any new products from you company. Please contact me about the scheduled backup problem and if resolved, I would then be interested in an upgrade.

    • Edwin says:

@Terry, You can alternatively try scheduling the backup with Windows system scheduler, if the built-in home-brew scheduling function doesn’t work for you, it’s quite simple too an it’s more flexible.

In Gmail Keeper main window right click the profile you want to schedule and select ‘Generate Command Line’, then follow the instructions given.

In the new version of GmailKeeper the scheduling will be re-implemented using the Windows scheduler and should be more reliable.

  7. garyzim says:

Hi Edwin, and thanks for this program. I have not purchased or started using, but I will – I like the “security blanket” of keeping a backup of my email on my local machine instead of trusting it all to “the cloud”. Question, though: I notice the free upgrade is within six months of purchasing the original. Are you quite sure that the new version will be released within six months? If so, I will purchase the “old” Gmail Keeper now, but if there’s a chance it could be more than six months before the new version is released, I will wait. Thanks!

    • Edwin says:

hi garyzim, yes, I’m sure the new version will be out within the free upgrade period if you buy now, I think the new release will be earlier. The bottom line is, you can ask for a refund if that doesn’t happen.

  8. Brian says:

I just bought the app. Will the new version be compatible with emails downloaded with the new version? Also can you clarify if i delete an email from gmail does it also get deleted from the backup the next time I run a backup? Thanks.

    • Edwin says:

Hi Brian, the new version will still use the same backup archive format. No, GmailKeeper doesn’t delete emails in local backup archive in any case.

  9. Stephen Horrillo says:

So when is the new version going to be released?

  10. When will the new version be released?

  11. Bryan Wagoner says:

    Any updates?

  12. Yosh says:

Edwin – Is there really going to be a new version? What’s going on?

Also – I am concerned about paying again for this product. Since I bought it almost a year ago, I have reported to you by email various bugs, problems & issues that prevent me from getting full value – and I have had no response from you to those reports. I am very happy when I get a response on these public forums, but your support of me as a paying customer has been, sadly, below expectations – not even acknowledgment that I’ve written you.

Will the new version be any better? Will it address the numerous problems in GmailKeeper? Will you provide updates to it to fix issues as we customers discover and report them? Will you give support?

When I bought the product I expected an update to be out imminently (as you promised in previous blog posts). What should I expect now?

  13. Stephen says:

No replies from Gmailkeeper since October. They must be going out of business!

    • Edwin says:

@Stephen, sorry, but that’s not true, I’ll post updates soon. The main reason is that, I have several products in parallel – while working on a new one and rewriting two of them – I was too optimistic on the schedule and progress! I know I’m not doing, but eventually they all will be out.

  14. Addie says:

So? I’m an interested new customer. Has the new version come out? No support is not good advertising. Should I buy?

  15. kocurek says:

    Any news on this?

  16. Yosh says:

What’s up Edwin? I thought you were going to release a new version of GmailKeeper. But nothing has happened. OTOH, I see that your website OwnMyCopy is now advertising a downloadable product. Is that the new GmailKeeper? Or have you abandoned GmailKeeper and all of us paid customers to start a new product line? Is there a migration path? Will it be a free move for those of us who bought so very long ago on your promises of a free, soon-to-be-released upgrade?

    Please advise.
